The author read her poetry on the Third Programme, a national radio station produced and broadcast by the BBC from 1946 - 1967. The Third Programme became one of the leading cultural and intellectual forces in Britain. Stevie Smith was awarded the Cholmondeley award for poets in 1966 and won the Queen's Gold Medal for poetry in 1969. A successful play based on her life was filmed in 1978. Because Smith was treated for psychological problems, the poem Not Waving but Drowning's personal significance has been the topic of several pieces of literary criticism.
